Dreidel Crochet Pattern-The Short Answer

Materials

• 6.5mm hook
• Hometown USA yarn, Size 6 super bulky yarn, not fluffy

Abbreviations

• Ch — chain
• sk — skip
• sc — single crochet
• BLO — back loop only
• sl st — slip stitch
• dec — decrease
• FO — fasten off

Middle

Start with the middle section to create the cube-like part of the dreidel. Work the rows back and forth, keeping 8 stitches across. The BLO rows create the corners as the piece takes shape.

1. Ch 9, sk 1, sc 8 in the back bumps of the chain (8).
2. Ch 1, turn, sc 8 for rows 2-8 (8).
3. Ch 1, turn, BLO sc 8 on row 9 (8). This forms the first corner.
4. Ch 1, turn, sc 8 for rows 10-16 (8).
5. Ch 1, turn, BLO sc 8 on row 17 (8). This forms the second corner.
6. Ch 1, turn, sc 8 for rows 18-24 (8).
7. Ch 1, turn, BLO sc 8 on row 25 (8). This forms the third corner.
8. Ch 1, turn, sc 8 for rows 26-32 (8).
9. On row 33, Ch 1, turn, then sl st through the BLO of the next stitch and the matching stitch from row 1 eight times. This closes the body and forms the fourth corner. Do not fasten off.

The piece should now have the shape of a cube with two sides still open. Keep the yarn attached and continue with the Bottom.

Bottom

The Bottom is crocheted directly from the open edge of the Middle. Begin by working into the ends of the rows, leaving the corners unworked. This gives 7 stitches along each side and 28 stitches in total.

1. Ch 1, sc 1 in the ends of every row except the corners. There will be 7 stitches per side, for a total of 28 stitches. Do not count the chain stitch (28).
2. [sc 5, dec] repeat around (24).
3. Sc around (24).
4. [sc 2, dec] repeat around (18).
5. Sc around (18).
6. [sc, dec] repeat around (12).
7. Dec around (6). FO, then use the yarn end to close the hole and tuck the yarn end inside the dreidel.

Before starting the Top, embroider the sides while they are still easy to reach.

Top

Now work from the other open side of the cube. Join the yarn to the middle of one side. Since the first row is worked in back post single crochet, attach the yarn with a back post stitch to help keep the corners neat.

1. Back post single crochet around, skipping the corner stitches. Make 7 back post stitches to a side for a total of 28 stitches (28).
2. [sc 2, dec] repeat around (21).
3. [sc, dec] repeat around (14).
4. Dec around (7). This brings the top down to the 7 stitches needed to begin the stick part.
5. Sk 1, dec, sc 4 (5).
6. Sc around (5).
7. Sc around (5), sl st to the next st, and FO. Use the yarn end to close the hole and weave in the ends.
